Protests erupt outside Kasba Police station as 3 arrested in alleged Kolkata college gang rape
The BJP erupted in celebration outside the West Bengal Assembly on Wednesday after the Calcutta High Court stayed the state government’s move to include 140 additional communities in the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category. BJP MLAs were seen distributing laddus and beating drums in what they described as a “victory for the rights of the Hindu community.”
The interim stay was issued by a division bench of Justice Tapobrata Chakraborty and Justice Rajasekhar Mantha. The court was responding to a legal challenge to the state’s recent notification, which aimed to expand the OBC list significantly. The BJP has opposed the move, alleging it was politically motivated and targeted at appeasement.
Leader of the Opposition Shubhendu Adhikari had already indicated during a bypoll campaign in Kaliganj on Tuesday that Wednesday would see a celebration in the Assembly. “This is not just a legal win, but a fight for social justice,” he had said.
The court’s interim relief marks a significant moment in the politically charged debate over caste reservations in West Bengal, as the state prepares for crucial elections ahead.
